Bard's SummerScape series brings great scholars to the campus each summer to investigate in depth the work of great composers - some of whom are outside the usual classical canon. The works presented may be both instrumental works for ensembles of various sizes, as well as fully staged operas, dramatic works and dance presentations.
Such a broad range of performance types demands enormous flexibility both acoustically and theatrically. The principal concert venue has a uniquely customized stage enclosure that completely transforms the hall from an end-stage concert venue to a traditional proscenium house without the least sense that one configuration is a compromise for the other. The principal venue is complemented by a studio theater, dance rehearsal/performance spaces and a fully equipped scene shop and technical support spaces.
